The Mandel Scholarship has been established by Mireille Chi Mandel
(b. 2005) in memory of her grandfather, Gerald (Jerry) Mandel
(1932-1984).
The Mandel Scholarship aims to provide a recent (or soon to be)
graduate of music or art related studies with the opportunity to
develop their skills within the music or art field. This
will involve working at the Nesbitt Centre for one year, conducting
art or music sessions with Nesbitt Centre students. During
this one year work placement the successful applicant will also be
offered the opportunity to complete further studies in the areas of
music or art.
The Scholarship has been established with three purposes in mind:
1) providing the Nesbitt Centre with additional music or art
resources;
2) providing meaningful work experience for those interested in
studying music or art as a profession; and
3) promoting awareness of the benefits of music and art.
The Scholarship has been established in the memory of Gerald (Jerry)
Mandel.
During his life Jerry pursued a wide variety of intellectual and
creative interests including numismatics, photography, fine art,
wood working and the art of Bonsai. Jerry was even able to draw the
architectural plans for the house that was to be home to his family
of four children for 20 years.
Paramount amongst Jerry's passions was music. His comprehension of
the
field was immense, spanning from classical music to modern jazz and
all
points in between. He patiently taught himself music composition and
how to play
the vibraphone. He would have been proud to be associated with a
program
providing an outlet for expression through music or art. Hence, the
establishment of The
Mandel Scholarship.
